Hazelnuts
Hazelnuts are a healthy, nutritious protein – delicious eaten raw or roasted and so versitile in many sweet and savoury meals.
Hazelnut trees can be grown in most regions of NZ in home gardens and permiculture systems. Growing hazelnuts commercially in NZ has great (measurable) potential. When grown as a conventional horticulture crop hazelnut trees require water and nutrients at critical times of the year. The nuts fall to the ground for harvest so this must be considered when designing your hazelnut orchard or growing system.
Trial Overview
The hazelnut orchard was initiated in partnership with the Bay of Plenty Regional Council as a Low Nitrogen Landuse project (2014) and has since grown into a small productive orchard.
The primary purpose of the trial was to investigate a land use option that focuses on water quality by reducing animals in the Lake Rotorua catchment, while also considering financial viability.
The trial includes three main cultivars – Whiteheart, Tonda Romana and Jefferson Hazelnuts.
Monitoring of pollen shed and flower timing, growth rates, water requirements and yield was done frequently. Results are available on request.
